TRIP REPORT

My wife Sandy and I were once again in the British Virgin Islands on the the island of Anegada Feb. 18-25, 2009. We again stayed at Neptune's Treasure, which we highly recommend for excellent accomodations, food, service, and friendliness! I was again licensed as VP2V/AK0M, and as VP2VES for the ARRL DX CW Contest.

Equipment and antennas were very similar to what was used last year, with verticals at both the resort and on the north beaches. Power was at QRP levels, running 5w maximum when operating during daylight hours at beach locations, and 10w (QRP+?) from the resort.

Operating time was again limited, as this was a holiday trip with my wife, and as before we were also involved in other activities such as snorkeling, fishing, and visiting with friends while there.

EQUIPMENT

Equipment used:
  • Icom IC-703 transceiver at 10w from our resort room
  • Yaesu FT-817 transceiver at 2.5 or 5w from the north beaches, using the internal 2500mAH battery pack
  • 13.8V DC power supply from an old NEC laptop computer
  • Palm IIIx, Serial CW Sender keyer, and GOLog Palm software for beach logging/CW
  • NA logging software at the resort on an HP200LX palmtop computer
  • Koss "The Plug" earbuds
  • Palm Paddles
ANTENNAS

At the resort:
  • 40-10m homebrew 14ft center loaded vertical antenna
    • Base was about 12ft high and used one band-selectable elevated radial sloping to the north to about 4ft high at the end.
  • RG-174 coax feedline (about 40ft)
On the beach:
  • 20-10m homebrew 9ft center loaded vertical antenna based on the PAC-12 design
    • Installed about 15ft from saltwater on north side of the island at Loblolly Beach
    • Eight 9ft ground radials positioned to emphasize northerly, westerly, and easterly directions
  • RG-174 coax feedline (about 30ft)
